THE OYSTER COLLECTION FOOD FUND

Every cent goes into buying food.

WHAT WE DO

The Oyster Collection Food Fund was initiated during the South African Covid-19 lockdown, which resulted in extreme economic hardship for some of our most vulnerable local communities.

As we emerge from our lockdown, many are still impacted and it remains a challenge to provide a basic daily meal.

The Oyster Collection Food Fund is driven by our own staff who want to make a difference and give of themselves to alleviate the plight.

They feed people in our immediate communities of Franschhoek Winelands, Sea Point Cape Town, and Ekuphumaleni Eastern Cape finding the simplest and most effective ways to do so.

Every cent is accounted for and goes into food with nothing wasted on admin or overheads.

FRANSCHHOEK

Weekend Soup Kitchen

Cecilia Williams, one of our Duty Managers, developed a plan together with her sisters Marilyn and Natasha, to provide a meal on Sundays for the needy in Groendal. The soup kitchens in this suburb of Franschhoek only operate during the week, so the sisters started providing from their own pockets. The numbers have quickly grown to over 400 people coming to collect a healthy bowl of food and we’re now supporting the ladies to meet the demand. Chef Ashleigh, Kim, Justin and Luka are operating out of the Avondrood and La Fontaine kitchens, preparing the meals on Saturdays and finishing off to distribute on Sunday.

SEA POINT

Sandwiches for the Homeless

At Blackheath Lodge, we make sandwiches every second day and deliver them to the homeless people in the Atlantic Seaboard area. It is practical and efficient means of feeding this community. Our team makes between 100-120 sandwiches to support the Oyster Collection Food Fund. From egg to tuna to peanut butter and jam we try to keep it different every second day. Charle, Godfrey, Riano and Karin – our team that lives on-site - are very motivated to keep active and champion this project during lockdown.

EASTERN CAPE

Food Parcels

The Kenton-on-Sea Ratepayers Association (KOSRA) sources and prepares food parcels for the local communities in Kenton-on-Sea, Eastern Cape. These communities are hardest hit by the lockdown with so many unable to work and earn a basic living. Many households rely on one breadwinner. KOSRA has the know-how and infrastructure to identify the needy and efficiently distribute the parcels. We have supported the first two distributions, but the need is increasingly evident by the day.
